CV – The Basics

A UK CV may be different from the style you use in your home country. The following guide provides the basics of what to include.


Do include:

  • Your education
  • Your employment history
  • Voluntary work
  • Skills, strengths and personal qualities
  • Achievements
  • Interests – this is optional

 Do not include:

  • Address
  • Marital status
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Photograph
  • Referee details (addresses, emails, phone numbers should not be included)

The Format

  • No more than 2 pages
  • Easy to read
  • Consistent format throughout the C.V
  • Use one font such as Arial or Trebuchet
  • Use one font size – 11 pt or 12pt (except perhaps for your name which could be bigger)  
  • Headings in bold but not underlined

Language

  • No spelling or grammar mistakes
  • Clear and concise language
  • Easy to read, no long sentences
  • Easy to find information
