Your Career Journey

Start working towards your goals, developing your skills and gaining relevant experience so you are ready to launch into your new career once have completed your course. Of course, you studies should be your priority, but try to find the time to develop yourself in a variety of ways – the information below is a guide to the kind of activities you could be doing.

Book an appointment with a careers adviser – this will give you the opportunity to identify your goals and consider how you might start working towards them.

If you have not yet had much work experience, you might want to consider:

  • part-time jobs
  • voluntary work
  • involvement in student societies
  • taking part in events and challenges
  • attending careers group sessions on employability and personal development
  • taking a psychometric test to increase awareness of your strengths
  • English: if it not your first language, keep working to improve, it is one of the most powerful tools you have for working in the UK

In your second year: 

  • Find an internship – don’t leave it too late, start your research the preceding summer as many companies recruit early on
  • Network – both physically and digitally, do you have a LinkedIn profile?
  • Job interview practice – make an appointment with a careers adviser to do a practice interview
  • Psychometric and ability testing – many companies use this as the first tier of the selection procedure. Click here for practice tests
  • Taking additional course such as: Digital Media Marketing (free course),  Business Enterprise Certificate (BEC),  Project Management 

In your third year: 

  • The application process for graduate jobs and schemes may begin as early as September/October for the following year – start your research over the summer
  • Go to graduate job fairs – click here for information on what’s going on in London
  • Network – ensure your LinkedIn profile is completed, talk to people about what you are looking for: Networking events can be found on Eventbrite and MeetUp
